What each message means, why it happens, and how to fix it.
When a link can't be turned into a thumbnail, Thumbnail Downloader says why instead of failing quietly. Almost every problem comes down to one thing: the link points at something other than a single, public YouTube video. Find the message you saw below.
Any of these works. VIDEO_ID stands for the video's 11-character ID, and you can also paste just the ID by itself.
youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_IDyoutu.be/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/shorts/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/live/VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/embed/VIDEO_IDmusic.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_IDm.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_IDyoutube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&list=PLAYLIST_ID. The tool uses the video part and ignores the playlist part. What it means. The box was empty, or held only spaces, when you pressed Get thumbnail.
Why it happens. Usually the button was pressed before pasting, or the paste didn't go through. On some phones you need to press and hold inside the box and tap Paste.
How to fix it. Copy the link from YouTube (in the app, tap Share and then Copy link; in a browser, copy the address bar) and paste it into the box. If you've installed the Android app, you can skip this: tap Share in YouTube and choose Thumbnail Downloader.
What it means. The text you pasted isn't a link to youtube.com or youtu.be, or isn't a link at all.
Why it happens. The usual causes are copying the address of a page that merely embeds the video, pasting a search result or a tracking link (some messaging and social apps wrap links before opening them), or pasting a link from another video site. Thumbnails are only available for YouTube videos, so Vimeo, TikTok, Instagram and similar links won't work.
How to fix it. Open the video on youtube.com or in the YouTube app and copy its link from there. If another app wrapped the link, open it first and copy the address from the browser.
What it means. A playlist is a collection of videos, and every video in it has its own thumbnail. The link you pasted points at the whole collection, so there is no single video to look up.
Why it happens. Tapping Share on a playlist, or copying the address of a playlist page, gives a playlist link. This is the most common slip when sharing from the YouTube app, because the Share button on a playlist shares the whole playlist.
How to fix it. Open the playlist, tap the video you want, then copy or share that video's link. A link to a video inside a playlist works fine: it has a &list= part on the end, and the tool simply uses the video part. If you want a playlist's cover image, it is normally the thumbnail of its first video, so use that video's link.
What it means. The link points at a channel page (links containing @name, /channel/, /c/ or /user/), which shows a profile picture and banner rather than a video.
Why it happens. Sharing a channel from the app, or copying the address from a channel's page, produces a channel link.
How to fix it. Open one of the channel's videos and use that video's link. Channel banners and profile pictures aren't video thumbnails, so this tool doesn't fetch them.
What it means. A clip is a short excerpt that someone cut from a longer video. Its link points at the clip, not at the original video.
Why it happens. Clip links carry their own code instead of the original video's 11-character ID, so there is nothing to look a thumbnail up with.
How to fix it. Open the clip and look for the link to the full video on the clip's page. Open that video and copy its link instead.
What it means. The link is a real YouTube address, but it leads to something other than a video: the home page, search results, a channel tab, your subscriptions, a hashtag page or a community post.
How to fix it. Open the video so that it plays on its own page, then copy its link. In the YouTube app, tap Share and then Copy link.
What it means. The link seems to point at a video, but its video ID is missing or isn't exactly 11 characters long.
Why it happens. The link was cut off when it was copied. Messaging apps and email programs sometimes break long links, and it's easy to miss the last few characters when selecting text by hand. If you typed the ID yourself, remember that IDs are case-sensitive and mix letters, digits, underscores and hyphens.
How to fix it. Copy the whole link again from YouTube and paste it in. If you typed the ID, check every character, including upper and lower case.
What it means. The link looks right, with a valid 11-character ID, but YouTube has no thumbnail for it. When YouTube has no image it answers with a small blank placeholder, which this tool recognises and reports as “not found” instead of showing it as a result.
Why it happens. The video is private or has been deleted, or the ID doesn't belong to any video (a single wrong character gives a different ID that doesn't exist). Brand-new uploads and live streams that have just started can also take a little while to get their images. An image occasionally lingers for a short time after a video is removed, which is why a deleted video can sometimes still work.
How to fix it. Open the same link on YouTube. If the video doesn't play there, its thumbnail usually isn't available either. If it does play, wait a few minutes and try again.
What it means. Your browser couldn't load the image at all. This is different from “No thumbnail found”, where YouTube answered and said it has nothing.
Why it happens. The connection dropped, an ad or content blocker or privacy extension is blocking img.youtube.com, or you're on a VPN, school or workplace network that restricts YouTube.
How to fix it. Try again. Pause any blocker for this site, or switch networks (for example from Wi-Fi to mobile data). If YouTube itself loads fine but this keeps failing, let us know.
What it means. Your device has no internet connection right now.
Why it happens. Thumbnails are loaded from YouTube each time, so the tool can't work without a connection. That includes the installed app, which opens offline but can't fetch anything until you reconnect.
How to fix it. Reconnect and press Get thumbnail again.
That isn't an error message, but it's the most common follow-up question. Some browsers, mostly the ones built into other apps, block direct downloads. The saving steps for iPhone, Android and desktop are on the home page.
